National Magazine: This NM City Will Be Top Retirement Destination
Is Las Cruces the next top retirement destination?
U.S. News & World Report spotlighted it as one of three cities that could become just that.
Is Las Cruces the next top retirement destination? U.S. News & World Report thinks it could be.The magazine noted the new Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks national monument as a draw, saying that research shows retirees are more likely to move to Western counties that have protected lands. Las Cruces’ low cost of living is a factor, too. And seniors who move to the city get a unique welcome kit full of special offers.
A 2013 study predicted that designating Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks as a national monument would boost the economy.
The U.S. News story isn’t the first to note Las Cruces’ appeal to those in retirement, but it may be one of the most high-profile yet. Smart Money touted New Mexico as a retirement option in 2012, with a nod to Las Cruces. And the AARP also named Las Cruces a top “sunny place to retire” in 2012.
