On Thursday, June 9 the Albuquerque Journal hosted a combined GAAR Affiliate Mixer and HomeStyle launch party. The event was a phenomenal success and the HomeStyle team would like to sincerely thank each of the 150+ attendees.

We also want to thank St. Clair Winery for catering the event and Gold Financial Services for donating the drinks. The event included a tour of the Journal campus and press room. A photo wall with goofy props allowed attendees to capture some serious and some very silly moments. Photos from the event are below.

Smart Growth Class – Jam-Packed with New Development Ideas

June 15, 2016 by CARNM

Over 160 attendees participated in our first “Smart Growth for the 21st Century” class at the GAAR REALTOR® Building. In addition to training from the expert planner, Janet Tharp, attendees from GAAR, CARNM, HBACNM and the City of Albuquerque were treated to a special Albuquerque Smart Growth presentation from Mayor Berry as he shared his vision for growth in Albuquerque.
During the RECPAC* sponsored class, participants learned Smart Growth basic principles, how they apply our community’s ABC-Z Comprehensive Plan, and how REALTORS® can advocate Albuquerque’s development plan on behalf of their clients.

The first step to this advocacy is to understand and learn how to apply the 10 Smart Growth Principals:

  • Mix land uses
  • Take advantage of compact building design
  • Create a range of housing opportunities and choices
  • Create walkable neighborhoods
  • Foster distinctive, attractive communities with a strong sense of place
  • Preserve open space, farmland, natural beauty, and critical environmental areas
  • Strengthen and direct development towards existing communities
  • Provide a variety of transportation choices
  • Make development decisions predictable, fair, and cost-effective
  • Encourage community and stakeholder collaboration in development decisions

The next steps in GAAR and CARNM’s Smart Growth initiative is to:

  • Learn more about the draft of the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Zoning Comprehensive Plan (ABC-Z) by reviewing the latest revision online, attend a city meeting/presentation on the Comp Plan update this Thursday, Friday or Saturday, or sign up for updates from ABC-Z.
  • Learn more about Smart Growth initiatives from the NAR Smart Growth Participants Guide by visiting Smart Growth Online, Smart Growth America or from the EPA Smart Growth Initiative.
  • Join other local REALTORS® in reviewing, understanding, and commenting on the ABC-Z Comprehensive Plan by emailing Eva Medcroft at eva@gaar.com.

Stay tuned for more information on Smart Growth and the development of the ABC-Z Comprehensive Plan.
*The Real Estate Community PAC (RECPAC) is a coalition between CARNM and GAAR.

Albuquerque's More Like the Rest of the U.S. Than You Think, a New Study Shows

June 15, 2016 by CARNM

When it comes to looking like the rest of the country, you can’t get much better than Albuquerque.

According to a new study from WalletHub, Albuquerque WalletHub, Albuquerque has the 11th biggest resemblance to the U.S. What does that exactly mean? Albuquerque closely mirrors the nation on metrics such as age, gender and income. Albuquerque is even more on point when compared to just medium-sized metro areas, where it’s third when it comes to looking like the rest of the country.

Albuquerque’s metro area has the 11th biggest resemblance to the U.S., according to a WalletHub study.

The metro area that most resembles the rest of the country? Indianapolis-Carmel-Anderson, Indiana, followed by Cincinnati, Ohio and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. View the entire list in the interactive graphic below.

WalletHub, a personal finance site, said the findings can be useful for business owners and entrepreneurs for finding the most fertile ground for their business ideas or for marketers trying to target customers. Traits such as ethnic makeup, household size, educational attainment and household characteristics illustrate America’s uniqueness from a statistical perspective.

WalletHub analyzed demographical statistics for 379 of the largest U.S. metropolitan statistical areas, including simple metrics such as age, gender and income and complex measures such as household makeup and housing tenure.

According to WalletHub, 55 percent of American households are renters and the median house price is $175,700. Other interesting statistics about the makeup of America:

  • Female population is 50.81 percent, male population is 49.19 percent
  • The average home is 1,817 square feet
  • The average commute time is 25.7 minutes
  • The average workday is 7.68 hours
  • 23 percent of households make less than $25,000
